Nurse Entry to Practice Programme (NEtP) at Hauora Tairāwhiti
The Hauora Tairāwhiti Nurse Entry to Practice (NEtP) programme aims to provide a supportive learning environment where theoretical knowledge and clinical skills can be learned and applied.
The NEtP programme provides newly registered nurses with the opportunity to advance their professional practice, knowledge and skills within their area of practice.
We are committed to growing our own future workforce locally, therefore consideration is given to both local people and Māori in the screening and interview process.
Nurses on the programme will complete a 30 point post graduate paper from the University of Auckland.
New Entry to Specialty Practice: Mental Health & Addictions Nursing Programme
This programme is for new graduate and registered nurses entering mental health and addiction nursing. The programme combines theory, supported clinical experience, clinical preceptorship and supervision.
Nurses on the programme develop their professional practice and mental health and addiction nursing skills. Graduates receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Nursing which is facilitated through the University of Auckland.
The NESP: mental health and addiction nursing programme involves days or blocks of classroom teaching, online and self-directed learning, workplace learning within the clinical setting, clinical preceptorship and supervision.

NESP: 0.7 FTE, 28 hours per week
Graduate Registered Nurses are employed on fixed term contract for 12 months. During the recruitment process, applicants will be asked to indicate in which area they would like to work. Clinical placements are planned to take into consideration your preferences and service requirements. In the Advanced Choice of Employment (ACE) application process, there is an opportunity to identify three areas of clinical preference.
NESP graduates will complete two placements including a community and acute inpatient setting.

There is a structured orientation to the Hauora Tairāwhiti new graduate nursing programmes and to the graduate clinical placement.
Each graduate has an assigned preceptor(s) who has completed an approved training programme. After induction week, the graduate and preceptor initially share a clinical workload before carrying their own clinical load. Preceptors and other members of the clinical team, work alongside graduates to support goal setting and opportunities for reflective practice.
NESP graduates receive a minimum of 20 hours professional supervision over the year with an experienced practitioner.
The NEtP Programme offers a formal, structured and supported learning programme. Graduates will complete the 770 Clinical Practice Development postgraduate paper (30 points) facilatated by the University of Auckland. This paper develops knowledge, practice and skills that will enhance and advance client assesment. Lecture days and assessments will be delivered in Gisborne. In total there are 12 designated education days over the programme period.
NESP graduates will complete two post graduate papers (60 points) through the University of Auckland to achieve a post graduate certificate in mental health. This will include 16 university days. Te Pou funding is available to assist with travel and accomadation.
Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP)
All graduate Registered Nurses are required to submit an e-portfolio at a competent Registered Nurse level prior to exiting the programme, as per Hauora Tairāwhiti PDRP. Information and guidance regarding the PDRP is given to participants throughout the year. Support is available from the PDRP Coordinator and the Nurse Educators.
Ongoing employment with Hauora Tairawhiti or Community Employers is subject to graduates meeting the requirements of the programme and the availability of vacancies at the time of completing the New Graduate Programme.

How do I apply?
All applications for positions advertised by Hauora Tairāwhiti must be made via the ACE online recruitment process.
Do you meet the eligibility criteria for ACE Nursing?
To be eligible to apply to ACE for a NEtP or NESP position you must meet all of the following basic criteria:
- Either be a New Zealand Citizen, Australian Citizen or hold a Permanent Resident Visa (or Returning Resident Visa).
- Be in the final year of a Bachelor of Nursing degree approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) leading to registration as a registered nurse or be awarded a Bachelor of Nursing degree approved by the NCNZ leading to registration as a registered nurse, no longer than 24 months before starting on a NEtP or NESP programme.
- You must have completed your Bachelor of Nursing degree in New Zealand and have passed your state final exam no more than 2 years prior to starting on an NEtP or NESP programme. You, therefore have up to four opportunities to apply via ACE provided you still meet all eligibility criterions each time you apply.
You must not have practised as a New Zealand Registered Nurse continuously (full time 0.8FTE or more) for longer than six months before starting on the NEtP programme.
Australian Citizens are eligible to apply to ACE nursing however they do not meet the Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) criteria for a funded NEtP or NESP position.
In the case that a graduate with an Australian Passport, who does not hold a Permanent Resident Visa, is successfully matched via ACE, their position could be funded directly by the employer, or the employer could apply to HWNZ for an exception to the residency status policy for trainee funding. International students who may have practised as an RN overseas are eligible to apply provided that they have completed at least two years of their BN degree in New Zealand before Graduating in New Zealand. These students MUST have a Permanent Resident Visa by the time that applications close for any intake. No other variations of visas will be accepted, for example, Resident, Student or Working Visas.

Interviews will be held between the 4th - 29th of October 2021. Initial interviews will likely be on the 7th and 8th of October.
