Dr Johan Peters

Clinical Director - Surgical

Johan is the clinical director for surgical/emergency service here at Hauora Tairāwhiti.

Dutch by birth, but proud Aotearoa citizen since 1969, Johan trained in Otago University, Wellington Clinical School and came to the old Cook Hospital in 1983, met a physiotherapist, born and bred Tairawhiti, and married her.

Commenced surgical/orthopaedic training in Auckland and Middlemore, but started a family, and decided to return to Gisborne instead. Johan then proceeded with further training in obstetrics.

Johan holds fellowships in general practice, rural hospital medicine, and qualifications in obstetrics, and medical administration.

Johan has 3 now adult children and two out of three working in health. Two have returned to Gisborne permanently, and one in Tauranga.

Counting himself lucky enough to have three mokos (grandchildren) two here in Gisborne and one in Tauranga – Johan admits “it’s the best thing that has happened to me. Having grandchildren that is.”

In his free time you can find Johan outdoors surfing, diving, fishing and he is also a keen mountain biker.
