Peter’s local knowledge of Tairāwhiti is a strong complement to his role as Māori Health Manager. He has experience advocating for kaupapa Māori at a national level through participation on the NZ Walking Access Commission, Waitangi Tribunal and Institute of Māori Arts and Crafts (Te Puia), and holds qualifications in Arts, Law, Business Administration and Environmental Management.

A key part of Hauora Maori activity is to work alongside primary and secondary services to achieve better health outcomes for Tairāwhiti Māori. His team bring the essence of Hauora Māori including Matauranga Maori (Maori knowledge), Te Reo (language), Tikanga (cultural guidelines), Wairuatanga (spirituality), Whakangahau (entertainment) and Whanaungatanga (kinship) which they weave into conversations with Tūroro (Patient) and Whanau.

Peter’s passion for health has also led him to help establish Phytomed, a company which develops pharmaceutical products for domestic and international sale. He also has a keen interest in the natural environment, managing his own orchard along biodynamic and Te Maramataka principles.
